Condition: some scattered foxing, traces of mounting on the reverse.

William Baillie, also called Captain William Baillie, retired from the British army in 1761; stamp commissioner from 1773-1795. He was an amateur engraver, who became quasi-professional. He sold all his plates to Boydell (who reprinted them in a collective edition in 1792 and 1803), but continued to engrave. His main activity was as a dealer in pictures and he was the main agent of the Earl of Bute. He died in Paddington on December 22, 1810, and his posthumous sale took place at Christie’s on March 15, 1811. For more information, please clic here.
