The artist

François Antoine Maxime Lalanne is a French painter, engraver and illustrator, known for his etchings. He is a student of Jean Gigoux and one of the promoters of the Société des Aqua-Fortistes in the 1860s. Lalanne is the author of a Traité de la gravure à l’eau-forte published by Alfred Cadart et Luquet in 1866.

The work

His engraved work includes about two hundred etchings and forty lithographs, of which thirty-six are interpretation engravings after other artists such as Claude Gellée, John Constable and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. He also provides countless preparatory drawings for illustrated publications. In his original engravings, he specializes in landscapes and urban views, especially of Paris. Henri Beraldi inventories more than 150 pieces, which, according to him, are worthy of interest. Lalanne’s pupil is Pierre Vignal.
