Marc de Bye was a student of Jacques van der Does in 1658. Painter and etcher, he engraved several animal suites. Adam von Bartsch describes 106 pieces, in several suites of animals, such as oxen, cows, bears, lions, tigers etc., on drawings by Marc de Bye, and after Paul Potter and Marc Gérard. On the frontispiece, dated 1664, de Bye takes the title of member of the Hague Academy of Painting. Huber, in his Manuel du curieux, says that de Bye, without renouncing the cultivation of the arts, embraced the career of arms, and that he served in the Dutch troops.

Paulus Potter is a Dutch animal painter. He concentrated almost exclusively on bovine subjects and achieved perfection in their representation.
