Jean Leprince Armistice signed – The Armistice of 1918, signed on November 11, 1918 at 5:15 a.m., put a temporary end to the fighting of the First World War. Planned to last 36 days, it was then renewed. The armistice de facto recognized the victory of the Allies and the defeat of Germany. But it was not a capitulation in the true sense of the word.

The cease-fire took effect at 11:00 a.m., causing bells to ring and bugles to sound throughout France. It announced the end of a war that had left more than 18.6 million people dead, disabled and mutilated, including 8 million civilians. The German and Allied representatives met in a restaurant car that had been converted from Marshal Foch’s staff train. In fact, the meeting took place in the clearing of Rethondes, in the forest of Compiègne.

The war officially ended on June 28, 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles.
