Etching and burin

Portrait of Hildebrand von Madrutz (German military around 1547) by Dominicus Custos after Giovanni Battista Fontana (1524-1587), taken from the work ‘Armamentarium Heroicum’ of Ambras (In Armamentarii Heroici Autorem et Auctorem, patrem & filium, inclytos principes) of 1601-1603, by Jacob Schrenckh von Notzing.

On the reverse, a magnificent print, the artist’s biography in Latin is inscribed in typography.

Schrenckh, personal secretary to Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol, made this inventory of some of the Archduke’s paintings in his palace in Ambras near Innsbruck. This work is the oldest known illustrated catalog.

Contents of the inscription: Inscribed in pen and ink on the tablet in the lower center ‘Aliprandus Madratius / Baro Brentoni & Aui ./.’. On the back, the biography of the artist in Latin is written in typography.
