Catalog of the exhibition “Daumier et quelques autres, 1830 – 1870 – 40 years of political caricature”

Exhibition that presents lithographs, engravings, newspapers. It was held at the Bernard d’Agesci Museum in Niort and then at the Donjon of Niort in 2012. This exhibition traces 40 years of commitment to freedom of expression and freedom of the press against censorship and repression.

A selection of more than one hundred works (lithographs, engravings, newspapers…). It highlights the means used by Daumier and his colleagues such as Grandville, Monnier, Traviès … to illustrate, challenge, denounce and mock individual behavior and political choices of the nineteenth century.

The exhibition illustrates the evolution of Honoré Daumier’s lithographic writing (1808-1879). It allows us to understand how his technical and stylistic innovations and his aesthetic choices have placed him among the masters of printmaking in the history of art.
